CottonCockerel
With bumpa bits would the chicken need to wear them forever or do they solve the bullying? My Lohmann is being such a bully, especially around food she positions herself between the water and the grub pot and if anyone comes anywhere near her she flies at them grabbing whatevers available. Even when the others are laying in the shade with lots of room for her to settle she won't and insists on rushing at them making them scatter and then lays where they were for a couple of minutes before going to hassle them again I know they are still 'doing time' waiting for Thursdays run release but I wonder if she will get any better when they are free ranging, or will she just wait til night fall ? OH wants to pop her in the pot.... - so any suggestions would be greatfully received Would love to hear from anyone who's used the Bumpas - thank you x
Egluntyne
Often just a few months of wearing a bumperbit is enought to break the bad habits. Occasionally though, you get a persistent bully who might need one long term.
The Dogmother
Be aware also that they need replacing regularly as they wear out. Have you tried diverting her attention away from the other chooks with some hanging veg or suchlike?
chickencam
Mine all had them for over a year and they have gradually come off only one girl still has one and we have had no further problems.
CottonCockerel
At the moment she has calmed down the others tend to give her a wide berth quite literally throwing themselves out of her way, It's sad really as now when you watch her at times she just wants to be in with them and when she tries to they just scatter... I suppose what comes around ! Anyway for now I will pop them in the drawer and see how she goes, they look like some sort of bondage device for chickens! scary things. I did show them to her so maybe she took note Thanks again for the advice and have great weekends! x
purplefowler
I must have just been lucky. Elvis was nicking KO's feather so we put a bumper on her. She was not impressed and went on a egg strike for 3 weeks. During this time she really calmed down so as I was missing eggs (we also had just got 2 pols so were down to 1 egg a day if we were lucky from KO) I removed the bumper. It has been off for afew weeks now and KO is looking full of feathers and we have perfect harmony. I think she needed a bit of a shock to calm her down. Now it is off she is laying again and the 2 newbies are just starting up and everything is good. I guess it just depends on the chooks. The worst bit was getting it back off again, far harder than getting it on
The Dogmother
You need some Circlip pliers/longnosed pliers to get them off
