knitting crazy
Edith weston (died May) Colly weston now top hen Alphabetti spagetti western - betty Ethalfreada/ Mr wittern possible male Boudicca youngest We had a death from possible egg bound chicken last month. One of our chickens Betty gets very broody and I mistook an egg bound chicken with broodiness. Since Colly has been left to go around the run on her own we bought two more at the weekend. When we picked up the birds we ordered they said that they had looked at them over night and now think one is a male. I nearly walked away as I feel they just wanted to get rid of a male that they could not sell. However they gave us the possible male an the female was not expensive. All has gone well with the introduction so far. But how do I know if Ethalfreada is really Mr Wittern? He is a buff sussex x wyandotte. The cock was a buff sussex and the hen a wyandotte. Our chicken looks like a buff sussex. I read somewhere about sexing chickens that if you had a silver and gold bird of the same breed they males would take on the colour of the mother hen and the females take on the colour of the father. Does anyone have any experience of this. Any advise? Or should I just wait and see, how old will they have to be before I can tell? Redwing
How old are they? If you could post a pic you should get a reasonably sure response, some people on here are very good Depending on the breed you get clues at different stages for example some hatch different colours which gives you an instant answer but then a few weeks old are harder to tell if you didnt see them as chicks, some you can tell at a few weeks old but not when they hatch, some take longer and some need to be fully grown before you know
Egluntyne
A picture would be very useful. Looks as if you need a bit of help sorting out your signature. **Click**
