chick hatched today i have put water in the brooder will they drink today? as in various books they say they will drink the next day i have showed the chick where the water is but it shows no interest it is very alert and lovely just want to make sure about the water as they you read so much different things

I've only hatched one myself and it didn't drink for a good 2/3 days. They live off the yolk that was in the egg for a couple of days I think. Make sure that the water isn't deep enough for the chick to get in (I put some marbles in mine) as they are a bit thick and can easily drown.

I'm sure someone more experienced will be along soon.

Dip its beak in the water - it might not realise what it is Can't remember if mine drank on day one or day two but once I moved the water under its beak and up to dip it in (I started off with water in just a branston lid with foil in the bottom to encourage it) it went for it.

That's right....dip its beak into the water so that it takes a mouthful I do this several times to be sure.

 

Also, put a few marbles in the drinker so that it doesn't drown.

is the chick with a broody hen? if so she will teach it every thing they need to know including where to get water from. if your worried that the chick isn't drinking you might want to mix some chick crumbs with water into a paste, that way if its eating it will be getting some fluids as well. good luck
