Ros
My poor little Blanche has not been right for about 2-3 weeks, with watery gritty droppings, off lay, then some soft shell eggs, then this morning a proper egg and looking perkier...........then hours later an awful turn for the worse, looking very egg-bound......so something wrong, bathed, no evidence of 'hard egg', but watery discharge, 30 minutes later blood pouring from her vent and looking close to collapse.........I decided enough was enough and 'culled' her...........first time......was awful. Her head came off and 'she' ran around the garden. Oh this is awful I know she was a very poorly girl and I had done so much to put her right over the last 2 weeks, but I feel so guilty, so worried my othr girls will get ill, but I think it was a 'mechanical' problem rather than an illness. :
Scottie
How terrible for you! Try to think of the happier times you had with her - she couldn't have gone on the way she was so you did do the right thing, not sure if I would have had the courage to do it. Ros
Oh thank you Scottie. I couldn't bear to see her so poorly and I just couldn't get her better. I never want to have to do it again

Ygerna
I think you have done the right thing. It has to have taken a huge amount of courage to do it so please dont beat yourself up about it at all. Try not to think of 'if's, but's and maybe's' you did what you felt was the right thing to do for her. {{hug}}

Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it. You did the humane thing, and although it might have taken a rather alarming turn, she was no longer feeling pain, it is just the nervous system reacting. I have culled several of my girls when they have reached the end (in each case with peritonitis) and a few for the table too, and they do flap for a few seconds. kitchens
Not nice is it. You definately did the right thing. The first time we did it we felt awful but have had to do it again and it gets easier. It was most likely a machanical thing like you say so don't worry about the other girls. Cross that bridge when you need to if need be.
