aqualiv
Hiya All I am beginning to think that Mabels egg laying days are over What age do they usually stop laying? Olivia
red
What makes you think that? It's early days yet given their background and the change in surroundings not to mention the weather and time of year. I'm sure once she's settled in a Mabel will be providing you with lots of yummy eggs.
Gallina
How old were the hens when you took them in? Battery laying hens are usually slaughtered at the age of 72 weeks (just in time to avoid the first moult), but they will go on laying for one more season if they are kept alive, and probably even longer if they are given lots of loving care. Something I am unclear about is the status of rescued battery hens. Are they only "rescued" at the moment when the farmer would be sending them away to be made into cat food because they are more trouble than they are worth? aqualiv
Good question. I suppose either way you look at it they have been rescued, either from death or a horrible life. The ones I have were rescued as part of an RSPCA case along with a hundred others Olivia
