Won't go to bed...

Recommended Posts

My newest chook Muffin, who arrived on 13th June, just won't go into the coop on her own at night! :wall:

She's not getting picked on anymore (wasn't at night anyway) but she still chooses to perch on anything she can outside!

I then pick her up to put inside and she settles in fine! Its just a bit of a hassle & a worry, especially if I'm out late at night.

Any ideas how do get in herself?!

No she shares a coop with the others who all manage to get themselves in before dark every night.

I've been having to take a torch out with me to find her and move her, she seems pretty determined to stay where she is but I don't want to take a risk leaving her!

Some chooks do prefer to perch high up rather then be enclosed in a coop.

My three bantams would prefer to sleep all night on the back of the bench in the garden. So every night once I see them there, I have to go out with treats which I put in the run. Only then do they come down and once they are in the run, I shut the door. Quite a palaver, but it's the only way I get them to bed!

Some of my younger ones have got it into their head they need to sleep on the roof of the coop. I thought I was winning the battle as it had only been the two most stubborn for quite a few nights but last night it was back up to five. If I turf them off then they do walk into the coop but if I'm not there to shepherd them in at bedtime they'll be on the roof

Lily our Amber Star insists on sleeping on the perch every night too! We went through a phase for a few months of plucking her off the perch and popping her into the coop each night, but she's had her way for the past three weeks while we've been on hols... I've more or less given up now - I'm pretty sure the run is fox proof. I always think it can't be nice for her all on her own when her friends are curled up inside together, silly girl.
