Kangarooby
Help! The dog has caught Penny, I managed to catch him before he killed her outright but she's very shaken and has superficial wounds on her back and is obviously minus a lot of feathers. Atm she's out in the covered yard, huddled into a cardboard box. What do I do, can the vet do anything, presuming I can get hold of him or is it a case of what will be will be?? Poor wee woman is shaking like a leaf
LJ's Chooks
I would be straight on the phone to the vet and probably bring her inside into the warmth, wrap her in a warm blanket or towel and cuddle her, sorry I've never experienced this but she needs lots of love and luck. I'm sure one of the mods will be on to respond soon... thinking of you...
Kangarooby
Thanks, will go and get hubby up to mind the kids while I call the vet. Might banish the dog to the yard and bring Penny in then, he is in SO much disgrace and boy does he know it!
Chickvic
I would bring her inside and keep her warm. She will need the vet if the wounds are deep and she will be in shock.
Kangarooby
The wounds really seem quite superficial, got engaged tone from vet
Chickvic
I would try and clean her up yourself, use some warm water with either a few drops of tea tree or some salt in. Does your vet do chickens?
Kangarooby
Just been out to her and she walking around, think we might have to rename her lazarus! Will hunt upstairs for tea-tree and clean her up. Don't know if the vet does chickens but we're in a rural location so he's bound to know someone who does if he doesn't himself. koo2cat
Two of our hens were attacked by my sisters two dogs recently, one of which sustained a nasty injury to its back and injured its leg. Both lost ALL their tail feathers. I took them both to the vet on the Monday morning (it happened on Sun) and she said they were worth saving so put both on a course of antibiotics and painkillers which I had to administer through a syringe into their mouths and bath the wounds twice a day with antibacterial solution and put on some ointment. All a bit traumatic but glad we kept going with them. One of them is now completely recoverd (feathers all coming through) and back laying. The other is so much better though still not herself and still not laying but eating and drinking and feathers coming back through on the unbroken skin. I should add that I had to hire an eglu to keep the injured hens in which they are still in now (it happened on 21st June!). I am glad we saved them both as it has been a very rewarding experience nursing them back to good health (although it cost me £75!!! in vets bills!!!) Good luck I hope she makes it! Kangarooby
Your poor wee hens, glad they're on the mend! Spoke to the vet and he's said just to keep her wounds clean and see how she goes overnight. Off to buy some tee-tree oil this afternoon,... Chucky Mama
If her wounds are superficial I would advise saline bathing and keeping her cool and quiet. A trip to the vets will add to her stress levels and may well be unnecessary.
Kangarooby
I hadn't thought about a car trip adding to her stress levels. Have bathed her wounds with saline solution, she's not looking too good atm so I suppose we'll see what the rest of the day and night bring with her.... Chucky Mama
Realistically the vet will probably give her pain relief and anti biotics. If her wounds are being kept clean and she is comfortable you may want to avoid that stressful journey, especially if she has to sit in a waiting room full of barking dogs! Keep us posted on progress.
SAB
Some rescue remedy in her water should help to calm her after her traumatic time - can get from chemists such as Boots, Holland + Barratt, etc - a few drops should do it. All the best to her and your family.
Kangarooby
Have bathed her wounds again, couldn't get any rescue remedy today but will hunt more tomorrow. She's up and walking around the yard, though diving for cover when the door opens. Her comb is still bluey so who knows what tonight will bring but she certainly seems to be fighting her corner... Space Chick
How is she doing today?
Kangarooby
She's up and walking around, her wounds are clean and have scabbed over and she's eating and drinking. She seems to have changed a bit from the skittish girl she was into my new best friend, she's just stood beside me, glued to my leg while I emptied the tumble dryer lol Will try her in the nest box tonight, we're going away now for a few days but the person looking after them is an experienced chicken keeper so I'm reassured he'll keep a wee eye on her. Maybe this'll stop her disappearing for days at a time like she normally does!

Beez
The same thing has just happened to me too. There are loads of feathers gone, so her skin looks awful, and 1 puncture wound (i think) I have put her upstairs in the cube, she is sitting up ok, but will it be ok to let the other 3 girls up? i have left the door shut at the mo. thanks
