Blue egg Layers?

Recommended Posts

I am getting my cube on the 21st July along with two Pepperpots... I am also getting a Sussex; maybe a Bluebelle and hopefully a 'blue egg layer' if...

Anyone knows of a breeder / supplier that will have a point of lay hen available next week?

I am based in Manchester but am happy to drive for a couple of hours in any direction to get my blue egg layer!

Thanks! !eggblue!

There is also Glencroft Poultry

http://www.glencroftpoultry.co.uk/hen_house.htm

which has columbines a hybrid hen bred from cream legbars, 90% of these lay green or blue eggs

It's based in Catterick so it depends if you are north or south manchester, but I imagine sat nav would still take you M62 and then North up the A1.

Are you looking for pure breeds or hybrids?

good luck, new chook shopping is fab :D .

Such a pity I don't have any available at the moment, I breed cream legbars and i'm in Cheshire, unfortunately my POL stock has all sold pending collection this weekend. I've been unable to hatch anymore as I lost my cockerel earlier this year so i'm waiting for the new youngster to start performing! x

Thanks for your help folks!

Like I say... I am happy to travel... I can go further than 2 hours if necessary.

These will be my first hens... what difference does it make having pure breeds or hybrids?

I am a school teacher and will only be able to give them lots of free ranging during weekends and holidays... but I do plan to have no more that 4 hens in a cube with run extension.

I'll ring the two that have been posted but if any know of any others that would be great... I am also traveling to Bournemouth on the 25th... so I could get anything en route or by making a slight (or major) diversion!

Pure breeds stop laying for a couple of months in the winter, but they do tend to live a bit longer.

Hybrids have been bred to lay all year round, except when they moult, which is for a couple of weeks a year from 2 years old onwards, but because of this tend to live slightly shorter lives.

Some people have all hybrids, some all pure breeds, some (like myself) have a mix.

Get whatever will suit your pet/egg/lifestyle needs :D . You'll always end up with more in the future anyway  . I started with only 2 hens last August and now I have 12 and a cockerel :lol: .

Hi, I'm in Cheshire too, and got my cream Legbar from the Wernlas Collection in Shropshire. It's a couple of hours drive from me, but well worth the trip as they have a great collection of chickens to look at. It might be worth ringing them beforehand to see if they have any available, as they often have waiting lists for some of the breeds. They can also arrange delivery if you can't collect the chickens yourself.

i'm saving up for a (pink eglu) or (purple eglu) (can't decide  ) and i was considering having wernlas deliver. i'd love to have !egggreen! and !eggblue! just wasn't sure about them arriving in the post  at least if you choose your own birds you can make sure they look healthy. isn't it a bit risky having someone else choose them for you :?: also would they deliver to London or is that too far for the poor chooks to travel :?:

I've never had mine delivered from Wernlas but I had a "Surprise" chook delivery from Glencroft poultry in Feb just before my birthday. They were all perfect birds, with no health problems and I've not had a sniffle out of them since.

I assume you would get the same treatment from somewhere as equally proffessional as Wernlas, and I'm sure Wernlas advertise that they do cover nationwide delivery.

Wernlas really take pride in their birds and I would trust them to deliver me sound birds but I wouldnt trust just anyone to deliver if I didnt know their reputation

When I went to Wernlas the nice lad who saw me took great pains to ensure I got what I wanted, he checked them over for signs of illness or injury

I don't believe they would sell anything under par - they have a great reputation to keep

**Storrs Poultry** near Sheffield breed Cream Legbars.

I'd give them a call.

It will take you a couple of hours to get there and depending whereabouts in Manchester you are based, you might be better off going via the M62/M1 route.

This place looks great! They are just over the Pennines from me!

I have emailed them... fingers crossed that they will have some Cream Legbars available!

Thanks!

I got my girls from storrs at the weekend - the guy is really helpul too. Just ring before you go as the stock changes REALLY quickly... I got my columbine from him, she may lay blue/green eggs but the colour can vary...
