Festival tent recommendation?

Recommended Posts

Having had great success here today asking for advice about Fitflops and MBT's, can I now ask about a good 2-person tent, for my daughters to use at festivals?

Okay, this needs to be the perfect tent  :-

1) Waterproof. 2) Easy to put up. 3) Good price. 4) Lightweight. 5) Inner and outer parts to it. 6) Most importantly, long enough for my girls, who are 5'7" and 5'10" tall.

Does such a wondrous tent exist?

They have strict instructions to bring the bloomin' thing home, too, not leave it to be trashed, but that might be a bit too ambitious of me.

This

http://www.millets.co.uk/camping/tents/3-4-person-tents/product/096013.html

is cheap and cheerful at £30

Has both an inner and outer tent so more waterproof.

A useful tip is to pitch it at home, peg in the inner then take it down with the inner tent attached.

When you put it up next time it's already got the inner done. Really useful for speed if it's raining.

Three man tent ... don't go for a two man they are too small.

You could check out the Milletts site.

There is a really cool Celia Birtwell tent here

but at £80 it's more expensive

Definitely get a three-man tent - the 'numbers' are based on people all sleeping side by side like sardines and rolling over at the same time! You'd have to check the dimensions but I would think 5'10" would be ok in most standard tents.

The tip above about pegging the inner in is a good one, but may not work unless they're travelling by car with lots of luggage space - most tents won't go back in the bag unless the bits are folded separately. Definitely get one where the outer is pitched first, then if it's raining when they put it up the inner won't get soaking wet.

The easiest ones are the pop-up ones, but they aren't very big (and they're absolute beggars to fold up again, unless you've got the knack of it!). Khayam and Vango ones with poles in are too expensive for festivals, but the standard Milletts or Blacks tents are very easy to erect, and your girls will soon get the hang of it. I can put my 4-man tent up on my own if I have to, with two of them it will be easy. Get them to pitch it in the garden first, to make sure they know what goes where, and it may be worth marking the poles with different coloured nail polish or paint, just to make it quicker if it's raining when they put it up.

If they can find one in their price range, get a tent with a porch. It's somewhere to put shoes/boots and so on and very useful if it's raining. An extra tarpaulin/groundsheet is good to, they're cheap (from DIY or garden centres) and come in handy.

PS You'll find most tents are waterproof - it's not much fun camping if they're not!

Aha ...... SOME ... won't mention which but could add MOST ...single skin pop-up tents are most emphatically not I'm afraid :(:(

Especially if taken to festivals where the rain is of Glastonbury intensity :roll:

Edit PS you can put your inner attached ready-to-pitch tent in a stuff sac if it doesn't fit into the original bag. It will weigh the same to carry whether it's in one pice or two.

:D Sorry to hear that ... mine's ok, but now I think about it, it's not a single skin.

I honestly think those are only intended as children's play tents.

It just made me laugh ... I love camping, and people who don't camp always say 'but what about when it rains' as if we all just get soaking wet and put up with it.

I'll correct the above - most double skinned tents are waterproof! You might get a leak around a seam, I always have a spray can of sealant in my camping box.

We've just bought this tent for our boys (altho a bit miffed as I see they've knock another £20 off the price since we bought it). You have to have a Go Outdoors card (£4), but the saviings you then get are amazing - ie without the card the tent is full price

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/tents/vango-karakum-2-plus-2-tent/CORETSEBKARAKUM

It comes packaged as a disc, about a metre across and 20cm thick (we've managed to get it back in the bag but it's a bit thicker now!!)

To erect you remove the restraining elastic, throw it infront of you and stand well back - it really does POP up. The inner section comes ready attached, all you have to do it peg it down.

It's about 7 ft wide and 12 ft long - which is loads of space. Our boys sleep 1 in the inner tent and 1 in the outer bit (so they don't fight) but even in the inner bit there's loads of space.

:D

Oh and there's a Go Outdoors in Harlow.

I've used one of these for the last couple of years (about 10 festivals) and hopefully "the Big Chill" in a couple of weeks.

"Blacks" sell exactly the same tent but for around £40.00 more.

Easy to put up. keeps most weather out.
