K-F-C Posted July 20, 2009 Share Posted July 20, 2009 My Cube, plus two Pepperpots, will arrive tommoz between 8 and 11, yay! Once they are in; I plan to visit one of two local (ish) breeders to pick up a further two hens. I want coloured egg layer and a white hen. I am undecided as to which pair to go for? I am a teacher and can therefore only give them substantial free range during school holidays. Also, these will be my first chickens. I am hoping this poll with advise me which is the best pairing to go for and weigh up the pros and cons. Pros for option A: As far as I am aware, neither breed is especially flighty. Cons for option A: Not a great fan of the look of Lavender Araucanas. Pros for option B: Neither are classed as Hybrids (I think) Cons for option B: Cream Legbar might escape!! Griffin Posted July 20, 2009 Share Posted July 20, 2009 I have a couple of Lavender Araucana growers and they're very sweet natured. If I'm lucky enough to have one girl she ought to lay blue eggs. She came from a lovely blue coloured egg so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! My Amber Star is a brilliant hen, no trouble at all, lays almost daily and is just a delight to have around. Daphne Posted July 20, 2009 Share Posted July 20, 2009 just to say legbars are prone to flightiness and sussex (if its a pure breed one) are prone to broodiness - which might be a good thing if you want to hatch or not if you want a good egg supply! I also have a Cream Legbar...she is flighty but she has only been here a month. I would vote Ara over the CLB as that is what I was meant to be getting and believe them to be alot calmer than the CLB. She's also a nervy girl, more so than my other newbies, but she is the cutest and despite being high maintenance I do love her! My amber star is also a little flighty but is a trouper when it comes to laying, she's my best layer and has a fabulous personality. Therefore, I have voted option 1.
