rosalyndavies
We have a broody hen who has successfully sat on a few eggs and today one hatched out. We need to know if the bars of the eglu run are baby chick proof. The chick has not ventured out yet and is alone with her mum.

Lewis
I think I recognise that blog, is she on here? For now while you're waiting for the small bird set I'd take out the roosting bars and put in a lot more bedding so that the chick doesn't slip through the gap and get stuck Good luck with the last chick
Lesley
I filled the Eglu with Aubiose so that the roosting bars were almost covered. I made a ramp from the Eglu door to the ground so that little chickies could follow Mum.
laurmurf
i did the same as Lewis, I took out the roosting bars and filled the space with bedding - I still have it that way as the babies are only 4 weeks and 10 days respectively. We put old shelving along the edges of the eglu run to stop chickies getting out and big chook heads and cats' paws getting in for the first few weeks. good luck with your hatch! rosalyndavies
Hi Everyone, Just to let you know that the second chick is pecking it's way through it's shell as I am typing this. Hopefully in a few hours we will have 2 new baby light Sussex chicks. I have tried to post photos but not been successful. Has anyone got advice about posting photos onto this forum? Lewis
Have a look here. The easiest was is to upload it to imageshack and copy the direct link to image into [img*] direct link to image goes here [/img*] (with the asterix's removed.
blackgold
I am rosalyns friend and have pictures of the small bird set on our eglu and pictures of the second chick. Click on my collie talk spaces link... the babies are so cute and harriet is being so excellant as a mum. she helps them to eat and drink. I didnt realise that hens did as much as they do with their babies. Now I know why there are so many sayings after chickens... eg mother hen. taking someone under your wing etc. xxxxxenjoy. Chook n Boo Mum
Hi Sue, what a gorgeous little bundles of fluff...I'm hoping that my six will hatch safely on Thursday or thereabouts! The kit from Omlet looks a bit like flat lawn edging, I have the crinkly stuff (sorry the proper word escapes me at the mo !!) around the edges of my eglu run, would that be ok do you think? It's only to stop them sticking their little heads out to become cat/dog/big chook "playthings" and escaping for the really diddy ones isn't it? Sha x Corrugated, that's the word I couldn't think of until I pressed submit.....!!!
blackgold
I have some plastic lawn edging but the kit from omlet was only £23 and has attaching holes so we went with that. the chicks are amazing and can climb in and out of the nest and always do what mummy hen says... bless.xxxx
Phosphorus
Mine were fine with unadapted eglu (except for removing roosting bars and filling with aubiose) from hatch. No problem with the eglu run, other than for broody mum who had a meeting with a fox through the bars - lost a lot of feathers but other than that fine. Chicks were too small for fox to reach
