saltercm1
Hi there, this is my first post to this forum. I have had my Eglu and chickens for 18 months now with no problems at all. Sadly one of my chickens, Twinkle Star, has suddenly become very poorly. I noticed two days ago that she had spent the entire day laying down in the Eglu where she would normally lay her eggs, the other two had to lay theirs outside in the doorway. I tried to encourage her out with food and treats but she was not interested and returned straight away. This morning I took her to the vet who is unsure what's wrong with her and has prescribed two antibiotics called Timacare and Baytril suspecting she may have an infection in her ovary (is that peritonitis?). She seems to be going downhill very fast and is so placid now I can open her beak and administer the antibiotic and she hardly even moves. I have taken her out of the Eglu and into a cat carrier thing in the house so that I can keep a close eye on her. She is interested in food but won't drink anything so I have been using a syringe to give her some water but when I picked her up to bring her indoors this evening the water seemed to pour out of her beak as though she hadn't swallowed any of it. Feeling so helpless and fearing the worst - is there anything else I should be doing or am I doing anything wrong? I would so appreciate some advice from anyone with similar experience? Thanks, Cathy
Plum
Sounds really poorly. Can't give any advice. Just wanted to wish you well.
Egluntyne
She does sound poorly. Sorry to hear it. You could perhaps try massaging her throat to get her to swallow. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon and you may see an improvement. Bringing her in was a good idea.

saltercm1
Thanks everyone for the replies. Happy to report that Twinkle is still with us. Seemed surprisingly bright this morning and took some food, had a potter around the garden, had a dust bath and then took to her bed again for the rest of the day. Thanks for the advice re: massaging her throat that has really helped with the medicine. Vet suggested that if she has an infection inside it may give her the sensation that she needs to lay an egg which is why she is spending all her time inside the Eglu - does this seem reasonable? She's back indoors for the night tonight to keep her nice and warm and safe - fingers crossed feeling a bit more hopefull now. Cathy
