Redwing
My goodness what a terrible shame I wouldnt have thought there is much you can do to prevent it as who knows what was going through her head at the time I think you will just need to keep an eye out for any small signs of aggression that may escalate Are you able to get a brooder and heat lamp set up so you can remove some or all of the others if anything happens? Lewis
Tasha is right, maybe think about setting up a brooder incase it happens again. Sometimes things like this happen, and its all about natural selection. Maybe the chick has something wrong with it, Broodys often will kill a chick if there is something wrong with it. Tulip
My broody went completely beserk when we moved her and the chicks at 2 days old - she was kicking the hemcore everywhere with such force in an effort to get to bare soil that OH thought she was going to kill the chicks. I was watching horrified on the webcam at work. We think that's why we lost one - he went flying with the hemcore. We removed most of the hemcore and she calmed down again and has been the perfect mother ever since. Has anything changed recently that could have unsettled her?
