Fur 'n' Feathers

BBFs and Magpies - Questions?

Recommended Posts

My Maude is a Magpie.

You can't see in the picture but her black feathers are beautiful, sort of like petrol on water colours. She lays about 5 eggs a week; usually around 68gs. :D

How does she compare in size to your Black Rock? and is she docile? Our existing hens are.

(By the way, she looks beautiful).

- Thanks :)

She's slighty bigger, more rounded.

Maude is the top chook but she's not a bully. :D She hates being picked up and gets very stressed if I try to get hold of her. :( OH has spent hours trying to get her to take corn from his hand but she'd rather starve where as all our other chooks coming running. :)

My Kylie is a Magpie and she is a stunner... bigger than our Gingernut and more rounded with the beautiful beetle green/black feathers mentioned by the previous poster. She's called Kylie as she is as much a showgirl as Miss Minogue

She's very friendly and will eat from your hand... lays 5 or 6 lovely pale brown eggs with white speckles a week, but......

...boy is she NOISY!!! Other Magpie owners have said similar with their girls too... but I think it's pot luck whether you get a noisy girl in any breed so don't let my songstrel put you off

That's relly helpful.

We're just thinking round the hybrids we'll get in September. We've been really fortunate with our three who seemed to be in a democracy

All the help we've had from the forum has been really useful. We don't want to get carried away and upset the existing balance, although we recognise that there will have to be some sort of shift with 2 newbies arriving.

We think we'll go for our initial gut reaction and get a Coral and another Brown Nick with less white in the rear (with the final decision to be made when we get there). That means we can call them Aspro and Kokkino (white & red in Greek to go with our existin kilo of wine :lol::lol:
