Wing clipping

Recommended Posts

Hi

depends what type of duck they are some of the heavier domestics will get so fat and heavy they dont usually need to be clipped(I never clipped my khaki campbells or Aylesburys but the Khakis as youngsters I did think they would take off but then they got fatter too)

What are they please

You should be able to do it yourself or there must be someone nearby that could show you what to do

Thanks :D

My ducks are (I think!!) 2 white campbells and a mallard, here's a picture from a couple of weeks ago,

I hope that they do get too big to fly! At the moment they are making quite impressive attempts to get off the ground :anxious: usually late in the afternoon, by the next morning they've forgotten what they've learnt and start all over again!! My ducks are not the brightest, most mornings they've forgotten where the pond is I lead them down to it and they are shocked and delighted that its there!!

Your campbells??aylesbury?? should be ok mine did use to sort of get to waist height and then failed miserabley at flying but the mallard I would def clip if you want it to stay! Depends if the surrounding area is safe but a little clip if you are worried may be a good idea. Young and springy!

But mallard could leave..they look really great but quite big once they put on a bit of weight that will slow them down

Having eyes tested soon fading away is that def a mallard?? as looks a bit khaki campbell? too much time looking at computer!

Nice to see some pics

um the whities do look campbell my Aylesburys looked like this until they got fatter as they matured, but they do look more campbell. If your ? mallard is the same size as the campbell that looks very Khaki Campbell? Khaki campbells are a cross of mallard but are slightly bigger than a mallard, but at the moment the mallards have moulted so they all look the same sex.

So look like campbells and poss still mallard?? but really nice pics and love seeing the ducks they look adorable. Lesley has campbells so she may be able to tell you if they will fly off.

I had the khaki campbells (brown)and they did try flying but soon forgot and got too big to fly(swooped a bit) A good hardy breed campbells mine never got lame or ill like my Aylesburys but unfortunately it was a fox breaking into their wooden house that got them, I had them 4.5 years good layers too.

Enjoy them very nice

Hi

Um now I am thinking Aylesbury again! If you look on the Breed section above on ducks the Aylesburys on those pics look enormous and round(fluffy). Mine and my neighbour who breeds Aylesburys did have the odd dumpling but not as big as those ones. Once your duck matures (if it was Aylesbury) their bodies are quite low to the ground and they really do waddle.

I have just looked at the Mallards in my garden as I feed them religously in the morning! Yours has such a deep facial stripe theirs are not so striking but it may be because they are moulting? Yours is very young and Khaki campbells do look mallard??

I dont think I have any digital pics of the ducks only stills. Perhaps someone will post some. I know that campbells are slightly bigger than a mallard. Good healthy easy bird though, and they are very good looking , you can send them to me as I would like them

Thank you indie and lesley for all the information :D Its all very interesting, I just looked at the breeds section at the aylesburys they do have the same look about them! I wonder what mine will turn out to be! I may be going to our local country park later where they have a large lake and lots of mallard  I'll try to get a photo or two to compare, thanks again!

Hi khaki campbells are bred with mallard the one you need to have a pic of is a brownish Khaki Campbell..its the size of your poss mallard?..if its quiet a big bird maybe campbell. I had brown ones...my wild mallards do have the strip on their heads but not as pronounced however they have moulted. The male mallards are slightly bigger and do have more orange legs too a longer body)

Saying that I have one lovely dusky looking wild mallard that comes back every year and he is a not a pure mallard so someones duck must have escaped a while back and produced this good looking duck

Hi

In comparison to the campbells I think the newbies do look very Aylesbury compared to Lesleys very upright campbells(my Aylesburys looked just like your new ones)

Howver my Brown Khaki Campbells were not as upright as Lesleys white campbells?! My campbells looked like big brown mallard ducks(they came from the Domestic Wildfowl Trust..so I was pretty sure of their breed??)

Anyhow they are all good looking ducks indie :)
