chrisnrob Posted August 11, 2009 Share Posted August 11, 2009 On Monday 3rd August we collected Sophia, a 13-week old Light Sussex, from a friend of ours who had hatched some eggs. We kept her in a separate area of the garden, fenced off from Audrey and Greta so they could see her but not attack her. On Wednesday 5th August she disappeared at dusk We hunted high and low for her but to no avail. Next morning she appeared in the garden as if nothing had happened - and we breathed a huge sigh of relief. We inspected the fencing and made it even more secure and all three girls have been free-ranging together since Saturday. Audrey and Greta have run at Sophia a few times but she just gets out of their way and carries on with her day-to-day business. They don't like having her around at night and will chase her out of the Eglu if she tries to go to bed with them. So she has been spending each night in the summerhouse. Tonight we went down to shut Audrey and Greta away and to move Sophia into the summerhouse and she has disappeared again It wasn't dark so we searched high and low in both our garden and neighbours gardens but couldn't find any sign of her. We just hope that she's managed to find the same safe spot that she found last week and that she'll be back in the garden again in the morning ... A chicken's-eye view of life - that would be fascinating especially for all these naughty runaways! When I was wee our hens roamed free - but they had a cockerel to keep an eye on them - maybe he was the one who made sure they all came home at night? chickenanne Posted August 12, 2009 Share Posted August 12, 2009 I've a light sussex and she, like yours, is a very naughty little girl! She loves to escape from the garden and play on the road, she really loves hopping over my low fences to scratch up my veggies, she adores the wood-shed as a nice quite place for a nap.....she flutters up into the apple tree then can't remember how to get back down, and on one particularly memorable occasion she managed to roost on the roof of our house (it is single storey, mind - I think she hopped from bin-shed-gutter-roof or similar!).
