Ygerna
There is a tree down the road laden with red berries but, are they ripe yet, or am I going to have to be patient a while longer.
henny penny
Hi I'm not sure but as i had time at the moment and i have a couple of trees in the front garden, I made some rowan berry jelly - I just have to finish it to today. First time of making - i hope it will be ok. I read somewhere on the internet something about using a particular variety - i'm not sure which ones mine are but decided to have ago. I wonder if anyone else on the forum has made some. I used equal parts rowan berrries and cooking apples.
Christian
This site about rowan berries is good. http://en.heilkraeuter.net/herbs/rowan-berry.htm It says they are ripe from July to October.
BeckyBoo
Yes I've made jelly already - apparently they're better after a frost although the birds could have had them by then, and as everything seems to be so early I just chucked mine in the freezer like I do with rose hips! Hope there's not a particular variety - I just stripped some bushes by the side of the road! BeckyBoo

Guest
Bex, what do you do with all the things you make, you always seem to be at it?
Old Speckled Hen
They are ripe when you can squash them with a good pinch. Frosting removes the more bitter alkaloids so I always snip them off the stalks and freeze them before defrosting and using them. Hope that helps. Ygerna
Thanks everyone! I am now trying to work out if I can just pick some off the tree down the road or whether I will get arrested for vandalism. The tree is planted as an ornamental by the council in the grassy area of our road. Anyone know the legalities
Old Speckled Hen
No legalities if you pick very early in the morning who said that?

henny penny
Hi I made my jelly using half berries and half cooker windfalls.I added lemon juice just before adding the sugar after straining through a jelly bag. Its a quite dark pink colour and is bitter with some sweetness. it reminds me a bit of campari/ tonic water
Ygerna
how did the ederberry cordial turn out, are your hands clean yet? hands finally returned to normal colour thanks I wasn't sure about the cordial myself, too mild and sweet I thought. But, the children LOVE it, as does DH so it cant be that bad I've made some Lemon Cordial today, using up the lemons that I used when I needed the zest for my Limoncello. Nice and non staining, will make it again
