JS1
Just a related question, how much should one give in the way of treats? Mine are on layers mash or pellets, and that's all they get in the morning, but in the afternoon I usually throw them a few leaves of lettuce and, at the moment because they're available, I pick a few rasps and throw them in as well. They also get a handful of mixed corn in the evening, every third day or so - and have absolutely loved left-ver pasta and veg. I'm worried about overfeeding them on treats, however, so have limited it to, say, two pieces of penne pasta each - would love to give them more, though, so would that be okay?? Mine don't like 'hard' leaves like cabbage and have left the peckablock untouched for nearly a fortnight now . Shame as it was quite dear. They love cooked broccolli but wont touch it raw...
Chook n Boo Mum
Mine have had watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries, corn on the cob, pomegranate, slugs, radish leaves, cucumber (skin removed), courgettes and their flowers... mealworms are their favourite though! You peel the cucumber for your pampered princesses .........mine get it with the peel on and if they are lucky it's cut into smaller pieces rather than one piece they have to s"Ooops, word censored!" over! Mine love weeds, sweetcorn in all shapes & sizes from plant...they never recovered after the veg patch ram raid...to tinned or frozen kernels and complete corn on the cob, mealworms and maggots, slugs & snails if the shell is broken, couscous, rice, pasta, grapes, broccoli, lettuce, strawberries, grapes, marrow sized courgette if it doesn't resemble an unexploded bomb, woodlice, flying ants, blueberries, porridge, shredded wheat soaked in water, sultanas, cold potato, not that keen on carrot peelings as they are strewn across the run floor this evening............and they love watermelon! They have a more varied diet than we do looking at this list!! Mine don't like 'hard' leaves like cabbage and have left the peckablock untouched for nearly a fortnight now . Shame as it was quite dear. Mine aren't keen on cabbage either...I'd take the peckablock indoors & try again in a few weeks, just because they don't like it today, doesn't mean the contrary little madams won't change their tiny minds in the blink of an eye !! Mine get a large pinch of corn thrown into the dustbath to get them all (9!) to return to the WIR whenever I go out, keeps them busy for ages!! I don't tend to count fruit and veg as a big treat, though they don't get it everyday & we keep the corn to a minimum. They have a big bowl of pellet mash which they think is a treat in the evening & they have an extra measure of water added in the morning so they finish it off for breakfast...they have dry pellets available ad lib in the feeders.
