Clairbear
I feel awful!!! I'm new to keeping chooks and I've only had my girls about a month and lost Mo last Monday. After reading lots of posts and checking my other girls it looks like they've got red mite. I just wish I'd have taken more notice of the signs then I might have been able to save Mo I've now ordered some red mite powder and am going to treat them as soon as it arrives. Just needed to share as I'm feeling a bit sad about it all. xxx
WitchHazel
HI Clair So sorry to hear about Mo, what a horrible introduction to chicken keeping for you. Red mite can be a real nuisance to eradicate. As well as treating your Girls you need to make sure you thoroughly treat the house, roosting bars, everything, with a red mite eradicator (red mite powder won't be enough on its own for this job). There are a number of posts with info on what to do.
Falkor
Hi I am so sorry for your loss What a sad introduction to chicken keeping. Can I just ask why you think it is red-mite? Do your girls have creepy crawlies? And are they moving in the day time? If so it may not be red-mite as I am pretty sure that they live on the house and move onto the bird at night. It could be lice..... Also redmite powder is to be used as a preventative and will not get rid of redmite once it is already present. I would say Diatom and Poultry shield are the best purchases for you at the moment. Plus if it is lice then there are various spays/spot-ons that can be used. Lots of advice and stickys in Poultry Health FAQ and the clinic. Em x
Clairbear
You're right - after checking my girls again they are teaming with lice *shudder* I'm off to Pets at Home in the hope that they have something to treat them with!
Doris 12
Hope you have found some and it gets rid of the little blighters. I discovered yesterday that we have a Red Mite problem, must be the time of year for unwanted visitors! These things are a bit of a learning curve, I will be much more vigilant in the future now I know more about what to look for. Lets hope we are pest free very soon
Chook n Boo Mum
You're right - after checking my girls again they are teaming with lice *shudder* I'm off to Pets at Home in the hope that they have something to treat them with! I got Frontline for cats *not licensed for chickens* & dabbed a spot on each of the girls necks and base of their tails, one ampoule did all 3. Worked beautifully & I think we forfeited the eggs for a few days after treatment. I wanted it treated now and as now was a weekend afternoon I had to go with what was available rather than waiting for a vet or an internet delivery ! Good luck, I hope the little monsters take the hint with whatever you manage to find. Sha x
