catcan
Evening all, I have eggs arriving tomorrow- yay ! But am unsure whether I can use a household disinfectant to clean the incubator or need a specialist chicken one?! I have Dettol, would that be ok do you think?? Please help! Also, do I have to sterilise the eggs before they go into the bator? I have googled both these points with various answers so now I am confused and panicking!!! Thanks all Cathy xx
Redwing
I wouldnt use dettol on the eggs, it may be ok for the inccy in very dilute quantities but is still fairly strong A specialist didinfectant would be a good idea. Brinsea make one Alternatively use a very dilute solution of Milton fluid on the inccy, I'm not sure if its ok for the eggs though, maybe just give those a wipe over with a cloth and warm water if they are very dirty
Lewis
I don't clean my eggs. There is a thin layer on the outside of the shell (I've forgotten what its called) but if you wipe that away, it is easier for bacteria to get in, so I think its best to leave them. Dettol should be ok, maybe go over it with a damp cloth afterwards to make sure theres none left, as long as its dry I'd think its ok. Egluntyne
I'd use a specialist one myself.
catcan
Thanks for all your replies. I've been hunting for a stockist close to me that sells specialist disinfectant but to no avail - I think they're all hiding somewhere!!!! I have opted now for a thorough wash of the incubator in very hot soapy water, then a spray with some disinfectant and then a thorough rinse with just boiled water. Incubator is on and is waiting for the eggs- eeek! Very excited Cathy xx
