Pigeon of fate

Recommended Posts

Yes you read correctly - we had a young injured pigeon (cat attack) which we left in a bush hoping he would get back to his parents Monday morning. Tuesday evening I went to let the chickens out and he was sitting outside their run and just hopped to the side.

I was worried my lot would spot it and peck it to death, but it hopped away to hide. When I looked later he had gone (I thought under the fence to next door). Oh know - I go to let the girls out of the run this morning and I have 6 chickens and 1 pigeon in the run  - surprisingly still alive, but not looking well. He must have slipped in whilst they were in the garden.

Given he was so young, couldn't fly and had a few injuries we decided the kindest thing was to put it out of its misery using humane dispatching course (broomstick method). If we hadn't it would have been the cats, foxes or chickens getting him.

You were brave! I took my injured pigeon to the vet. Either way much better than letting them suffer.

What you have to remember - I was too chicken to even go on the dispatch course - so I told hubby as he was trained and I wasn't he would have to do it. So it didn't suffer, but I wasn't brave.
