new chicken owner - advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My husband and I got 3 chickens on Monday and are absolutely loving having them.

I've been watching them in their run today and there were a couple of things that just seemed a bit odd.

All of them are doing bright yellow runny poos - it looks like egg yolk. Is this normal or is it something I need to worry about.

Also I've just noticed that one of them (Betty) seems to have a broken beak - its just the end of the top beak thats missing but its a jaggedy edge. Will this cause her any problems and will it grow back?

Thanks

Becky

Hi, and congrats on getting your girls.

As for the poos you describe, we loving refer to them as "curry poos" on here and they are perfectly normal. They basically are a poo from the chickens caecum and happens about 1 every 10 poos.

As for the beak, this often happens with ex batts, although its not an issue, your hen will wear down the beak as she free ranges, so do not worry :D

They often get squittery poos when they move to new accommodation. Nothing to worry about and it will soon settle.

One of my girls had a shorter top beak that looked as if it had been trimmed, although she wasn't an ex-batt. It grew back eventually and didn't cause her any problems. Once they start free ranging, the jagged bits will wear down.

Not only do 'curry poos' LOOK horrible - you wait til you move one! They stink! Adding Bokashi to their food makes poos generally a bit firmer and a little added garlic helps with the smell. It's amazing how many different kinds of poo they actually do each day. And when you think about fact poo and eggs all come out of the same place it doesn't bear thinking about either!
