Local horticultural show - beetroot?

Recommended Posts

Please help! My local horticultural show is at the weekend, and I really want to enter some veggies this year - carrot, potatoes and beetroot. I'm OK on how to display the carrots, but beetroot....? Do I leave some stem on? Do I leave the little tap-root in place?

All hints and tips much appreciated! I guess the potatoes should be easy - hope I can find the right number of a similar size and even shape/skin.

I've only entered flowers before, so any advice would be great!

the schedule for the Sandwell horticutural Show reads

Beetroot,globe,3(tops trimed to 3"/75mm)

beetroot,other than globe,3 (tops trimed to 3"/75mm)

at the start of the schedule it states

Judging in accordance with the Royal Horticultural Society Handbook

hope this helps

Be careful with the trimming of tops - our local show only accepted tops which had been twisted off!

We took all the suitable beetroot we had and washed them carefully - leaving the root on. Then we took them as they were, left them in the car and went in to the marquee to look at other exhibits. A man who was also showing was happy enough to tell us - and show us - what to do. We had a knife ready to trim them but he showed us how to twist the tops off.

Good Luck :D

Then I would have them prepared, washed and leave all the leaves on. Run inside when you arrive and see what the others have done - see if there's anyone to ask......then scurry back to your car and finish trimming them!

That's what we did - and although it was also just a village show they were very competitive :D .

They should be grateful you are exhibiting. In our village you get lots of encouragement for joining it - after all many of the exhibiters are pensioners so they do need younger blood!

Arrive with your beetroot picked and washed. Everyone will be dashing in and out of cars to get all their exhibits and there will be ample opportunity for you to look at some other exhibits before preparing yours. If you see a friendly face - ASK, most people are happy to help.

Well.... after 4 years of showing stuff, winning the odd certificate etc.... finally....

I GOT A CUP!!!!!!!!!!!

So, thanks all for your advice! The cup was for organic veg, so the beetroot must've swung it! I went for the trimming-leaves option.

Also got a first for apples and a third for lemon curd.

So, thankyou all!!!

I think a paper plate is more normal, but I've not been to a show where there have been egg categories, so wouldn't like to swear to it!

You should definitely give it a go, it's a lot of fun showing stuff. This is the first year I've got a cup but I've enjoyed showing every year. And it's always nice to be the "so glad to see younger people showing things" person, especially at my (not-so-young-at-all) age!
