I know you're convinced it wasn't a cat but we encountered a massive cat (albeit black) which seems to fit the description, he turned out to be a breed called Maine Coon and they can come with banded tails and all sorts of colours...http://www.maine-coon-cat-club.com/, quite valuable by all accounts....

They look gorgeous -it wasn't fluffy though - not so sure about the body but the tail was definitely not fluffy.

I've got a Maine Coon cat and although they are large with long banded tails they aren't the size of a Labrador. Fantastic cats by the way, real characters and easily trained. Very quirky and love to play with water! My Cassie has been eying up the new chooks with disgust and has taken to sitting with her back to them - if you can't see them they aren't there are they!

Some breeds of domestic cat can be very big - a friend has Maine Coones, which are twice the size of my tortoiseshell. I'm guessing it could have been something like that too. Theirs dont have fluffy tails either.

Love the video of the Lynx

 

When we were on holiday in Portugal a couple of years ago, we were walking back to our villa on a golf resort from a restaurant. Crossing the golf course my husband and sons ran back to me and my daughter shouting. Apparently a big cat type thing (huge apparently) had crossed the road in front of them and it was lit up by a car headlight. They swear it was a lynx or something like that. They do have them in Portugal. They were all very excited about it.

What a beautiful creature! The size is about right but I think the tail's too short. I wonder whether they are cuddly
