littlecrow
I know the feeders/drinkers here are great and do the job.. but would a dog bowl do the same job?
xScrunchee
Hi , The only problem with using dog bowls is that A) They could get tipped over and B) The chickens will kick dirt and muck into them so you would be forever changing their water. I'm using bowls at the moment as I'm introducing new hens and haven't enough proper feeders/drinkers. I can't count how many times the pellets have been tipped and kicked out all over the run floor and the water needs changing alot as they either kick bedding in it or poo in it
littlecrow
The reason i asked is because i too are about to introducing new hens and haven't enough proper feeders/drinkers. i looked at those ones on legs that brings them up off the floor they might be better. xScrunchee
That is what I should get really too. Would save alot of wasted food and changing of water!! If it's only temporary though-it will be fine. It all depends on how much it gets on your nerves more than anything! What type of new hens are you getting? Exciting isn't it? Ms Tilytinkle
Our haves glugs and grubs but much prefer a tall old plant pot to drink out of!! Its soooo sweet watching them drink out of it too, in a circle all together then heads back tee hee. Think the emphasis, why it works is because its tall. Chook n Boo Mum
For water I have 6 cage cups dotted around the WIR which can all be filled from the outside of the run when necessary, they can't kick bedding into them & nor are they big enough/in a position to stand on to poo in ........ I also have 3 super glugs and 2 standard glugs. They have 3 grubs for their dry pellets and I put a dog bowl of pellet mash in the run every evening for tea/early risers breakfast, which as xScrunchee has mentioned does occasionally get pooed in and the contents of the dustbaths flung in it but as it's only there for a relatively short time & isn't their main source of food, I don't worry too much. I have a large stainless bowl which occasionally gets tipped up and a heavy china waterbowl which has never been upended When I was introducing the batties to life in the real world I had food in the cage cups too as well as a shallow tray of mash which they walked in & pooed in and only once or twice managed to stand on the edge of & scare the living daylights out of each other as it sprung up & flopped back into the hemcore Good luck with your introductions...........have you any pictures.................... We were going for smaller ones like silkies ( as we were going to extend the run and have 4 in together..) but we are now thinking ( as we have to introduce the new ones slowly) of another eglu and 4 new chicks, but having a small budget i was thinking ( as they are cheaper second hand) a rabbit eglu and convert it ourselfs, hence no feed /water bowls. so now the world is ours we can get anything we like, i'm going looking next weekend, but cant buy until we get the re-furb done. kim
