Hi all, I was reading reviews for Eglu borders and someone mentioned that they use Rubber Chippings on the floor of their run. Has anyone heard of this or has used it, is it any good and where can you buy it from

If you search 'Rubber chippings' you'll find several posts about this.

 

They did seem a good idea and were recommended by someone in Practical Poultry a few months ago, but quite a few people on here have complained that they ended up rather smelly and hard to clean out. I don't have any experience of them myself, so can't really advise on that.

I Have the chippings and find them great, but you do need lots, think mine came in at over £100.00 and do top them up from time to time, but will last for 10years ( allegedly)

If you have them for 10 years do you have to keep raking them out and cleaning them or what?

Just rake them over and poo just disappears into soil below ,if very mucky hose over and every now and then I rake into pile put down stalosan F and rearrange everything.

I had them in my cube run before I had my WIR.

 

They were really difficult to keep clean in the rain, mud magnets. Personally I wouldn't recommend them.

Have you considered wood chip? It works great on the floor of our cube. It doesn't get too muddy and it certainly helps with the smell as the hens do a great job of digging through it. Every other month we top it up or remove it and add more wood chips.

 

Our local council allow us to collect their wood chips for free. Previous to discovering this, we bought the wood chip from B&Q.

I have also heard that the poo sticks to them and it's hard to clean.
