In two years we have never had a broody hen - now we have one and she is really funny. Friday she laid an egg, then sat on the 4 in the nesting box all puffed out making a purring noise. After a few hours we lifted her out in to the garden and she just sat all puffed out as if still on the nest and a couple of the old girls started pecking at her so we removed the eggs and put her back in the nesting box. Within 10mins of the eggs going she was out in the garden with the others.

 

Both yesterday and today have been similar - she has gone in to lay last, laid an egg and then sat on the clutch of eggs all puffed out, but as soon as we remove the eggs she goes out with the others! Now a broody hen that is only broody when she has eggs to sit on and carries on laying is something I can deal with.

 

...However I do have an empty eglu sitting doing nothing at the moment - it would be ideal for a broody with a few hatching eggs to look after

I have one just the same Tracy! I don't think it would take much to encourage her to sit and hatch some eggs. And I have space for a broody coop

My Black Rock has also gone broody. You shoud see the way she looks at my hubby every time he shoos her off the nest! I've ordered some hatching eggs to try under her.
