How many treats are too much?

Recommended Posts

Just wanting to put some feelers out about how often and how much folks feed their girls treats! We let ours out twice a day if we can. In the morning they have a run about and a dust bath with some dried worms as a treat. In the afternoon we let them out again and they get through about a quarter of a cabbage between them, a corn cob and maybe some melon if we have got some. They then go back into their pen with some more worms (the perfect way to lure them in). They always eat their way through their treats ferociously and I'm sure that they could eat more if they were offered them! We do deliberately leave the treats until the afternoon so that they eat their layers pellets in the morning, but should we be feeding them less ... or more?

Hello fellow penguin fan!

They will eat whatever you offer them those greedy chooks but you are doing the right thing and letting them fill up on layers pellets in the morning.

Ours have the odd handfull of stuff and then their main treats at "bedtime" by 7pm they gather by the netting waiting for Mum (formerly the Anti-chicken) to head out of the annexe and count them all to bed. Mind you she is struggling with the counting these days. I remember her saying "OK then you can get 2 chickens". WHOOOPS!

My girls get a tin of sweetcorn between them at bedtime :D If I'm late, they all gather at the gate to their area, pacing and looking at the back door to see of they can see me and alert me to the time :lol::lol:

You are doing the right thing by making sure that you restrict treats and feed them at the end of the day. Given half a chance chooks would fill up on treats all day (but then wouldn't we also  ) and not eat their proper food.
