bothered about my girls...

Recommended Posts

Hi all :D

A bit bothered about my lovely girls - Jemima the gingernut has had a bare undercariage for quite a while but seems ok so thought nothing of it (she does have a bright red bum most of the time mind ;).

However, most of the girls now have very scruffy looking feathers at the base of their tails (the vent area is clean and feathers all ok there) and we've had a large number of softies over the past few weeks. They get layers pellets, grit and poulty spice daily and citricidal in their water every so often if one starts to snuffle. Have just ordered some diamatous earth and verm-X for them from omlet.

They're new walk in run is very cosy (and bloomin' hot on occasion, IF the sun chooses to come out), they're let out every evening/afternoon for a wander round the garden and they do enjoy a nice dust bath. Now then:

1. could we put a dust bath in the run, and if so what sahould we fill it with (garden soil, sand, etc)?

2. could the feather loss and ruffled look be due to them getting too hot or not enough dirt bathing?

3. could the softies be due to having 3 elderly ladies in there (our beautiful ex-batts - we've had them a year now and they were around 12-18months when we got them.... notably, Molly is one of the two who ISN'T looking dishevelled)

Only Molly and Esme currently have nice plummage, the rest look like a right bunch of scraggies! Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved...
