At a loss, don't know what else to do - red mites

Recommended Posts

Don't worry Henriette, what you have to remember is that most of us are OK and don't get mites; as with most other subjects, the ones who post are the ones with problems - there are so many more positive stories.

Omlet housing is far less likely to get mites and if they do occur, then far easier to get rid of than with wooden housing.

The key is to be thorough and vigilant with your husbandry - clean the housing thoroughly on a weekly basis (jetwashing is good if you have one), then spray in all the nooks and crannies with either Poultry Shield or Total Mite Kill (the latter is new and has produced some very good results and feedback). Powdering in the housing with Diatom or Ant powder that contains Permethrin*

If you have any signs of lice or mites in the coop or on the birds, then treat both promptly, repeating the treatment after a week.

I love the idea of boiling the little critters. Will search for a similar steamer over here.

It is so nice knowing that there are others out there who all have problems too!!

Someone said something similar to me on Saturday - they said that whatever problem they had, they knew they's either find the answer already on the Omlet forum, or be able to post their query and have an instant answer... fair makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it?
