Quiet chicken, dodgy wing - Update: euthanised, Marek's

Recommended Posts

The post mortem revealed that MiMi did have Marek's disease.

Apparently, this now means that all my girls now carry the virus...

From what I have read and from what the vet told me; this is my understanding (please correct me if I am wrong):

The vet said that chickens should be immunised for Marek's at birth but in large commercial flocks it is easy to miss a chicken and that for many small breeders it can be very expensive to pay for the vaccinations.

There is no way of telling if the disease came from my two Pepperpots provided by Omlet or the breeder whom I bought MiMi and FiFi from... but whichever, their whole stock will also be infected... as once infected it is nigh on impossible to eradicate as the chickens will continue to shed the virus for the rest of their lives and you cannot successfully eradicate it by sterilising where they have been; runs / coops etc...

This does not mean that my remaining girls will become poorly as they may have good immunity. However, if their immunity is ever weakened they are more likely to succumb.

It does mean however, that if I ever add chickens to my flock they will also become infected with the virus.

Hi Petal,

Poor you, what a miserable week :( Has the vet got back to you with the results yet? If it IS Mareks then I'm sure if the other girls are ok currently then treatment should be the trick and make sure they stay that way...

Fingers crossed for you...

From what I understand... there is no treatment for Marek's

The other girls do seem in fine health! So much so that FiFi laid her first egg yesterday! (albeit the size of a small plum) :)
