Quiet chicken, dodgy wing - Update: euthanised, Marek's

Recommended Posts

Just noticed that my Lavender Araucana seems a little quieter than normal...

she is pottering around the garden but seems to stop and stand still for longer than usual... she is not jumping off and on chairs and plant pots like usual...

and her left wing does not seem to be laying a smooth as usual... it's hanging a little low.

she wont let me catch her at the moment with out stressing her and will probably have to wait until she goes to bed.

she is eating normally.

Any advice? What do I do if her wing is damaged?

Thanks

The same happened to one of ours, Pandora, not sure how it happened or why. She looked very odd for a few days then it slowly seemed to right itself. She didn't appear in any discomfort, she was foraging etc the same as always. Hope your girlies' wing rights itself too and her normality resumes.

I don't know...

They have been free ranging for most of the day... she has a little potter about and then seems to stand in one spot for longer that usual... sometimes with her eyes closed.

She is eating OK...

I suppose I'll just have to wait and see if she perks up!

How is she?

Not good!!

I noticed on Saturday morning that her left eye had all gummed up! I had not seen this before as I was concentrating on looking at the wing!

I cleaned the eye up with some water and she seemed to perk up a little and ate and drank pretty well.

Her eye seemed Ok when she went to bed. On Sunday morning her eye was gunged up again and was seeping white stuff. I had a look online and went to my local Pets At Home to get some drops.

They said that they didn't see chickens and I was better off trying to find a 'farm vet'... after explaining that MiMi was a pet and I had heard that some farm vets can see chickens just as livestock they gave me the number of a local avian vet.

I called this vet and they said they dealt with chickens... I booked an appointment and took her there... by this time MiMi had taken a turn for the worse... she was very listless and was eating and drinking very little... the vet seemed very knowledgeable and prescribed drops and some antibiotics for a chest infection that has also infected the eye!

She advised me to keep MiMi isolated... so as the infection does not spread. I have had her in a cat box in sight of the other girls but have been bringing her in at night. I have let her out a few times to get some exercise but she just wobbles and when she tries to walk she trips over her wings! It's heartbreaking!

I do not think she has eaten anything today... so I have been giving her water from a pipette and putting food in her mouth which she lets sit there for a while before spitting it out or eventually swallowing it! I have managed to feed her about six fresh corn kernels a few pellets, a mealworm and a couple of blueberries! And a good bit of liquid.

I am seriously worried about her now and am not sure if she will make it through the night!

The vet said it was caused by a virus or bacteria! But I don't know how... there home is kept super clean!

"super clean!. Don't beat yourself up. I have had a few different infections with mine, & I too am dead fussy, like lots of us on here! :)

Try to keep her fluids up, tempt her with every kind of treat you see anyone mention, Grapes are good, wet & sweet for energy. cucumber, pureed apples /

she sounds quite week you could try a teaspoon sugar in a litre of water (???sounds a lot of water???)

the vet might have some critical care formular, or pets at home sell a high calorie pase for dogs that is recommended on PP forum a bout a peasize is all that is needed a few times a day.

the very best of luck with her.

Despite medication MiMi's condition steadily worsened... I took her to the vet again and he suggested the best course of action was to have her euthanised. :(

He suspects Marek's disease and will carry out a post mortem tomorrow. :(

To make matters worse... an ice cream van drove into my car whilst I was in the vets taking the whole side out and then drove off! Thankfully a passer by got the registration!
