Wildlife Rescue!

Recommended Posts

Just got in from getting all the girls up and have had to carry out a mini wildlife rescue!

After letting everyone out I always do a perimeter check of the electric fence to get rid of any windfalls, twigs etc. Today though I found something a bit different!

Jammed halfway through one of the smallest holes at the bottom of the fence was a hedgehog! I've never even seen a hedgehog in the garden before (I guess because of the dogs!).

I gave it a gentle nudge and was sure it was dead so went to grab some hefty gardening gloves and a bag, After being shoked it had obviously curled up to protect itself (not a great defence against being jammed in an electric fence!) so it was quite a job getting it out!

As soon as I had it out it curled straight up into a really tight ball and I could see it breathing. So I popped it out in the front garden to recover. A half hour later it was still there...

I was rather worried that a fox or rat might have a go so it's now safely in my chick pen (they'd just moved into a cube thankfully!) inside my chicken (cat) carrier lined with aubiose and shredded paper with two feeders full of water and dog food to see if it recovers!

If it still looks sad later it's off down the wildlife rescue centre!! I have to wonder if it might end up liking it's temporary home a bit TOO much! It looks rather cosy!

Update -

After about another half hour the little fella popped his head out of the box and waddled over to the food and had a few mouthfulls.

After he'd had a bit of a wander round the run I opened the door up he sneaked out and proceeded to waddle off.

Fingers crossed he'll be ok now... unless he decides to have another go at the fence tonight! It can't have been very nice being shocked repeatedly!
