Today Charlie one of chickens has died.

 

She had blood coming from her bum when Mark found her in the nesting box. Any ideas?

 

All the others are ok, so we know it wasnt a fox attack.

She could have had a prolapse

 

This would also have potentially made the other girls start pecking at it, hence the blood.

 

That is one option, although I am sure they may be others.

I'm so sorry to hear that . It's a bit worrying, 2 dying within 2 days . Any other symptoms you can see?

There has been no syptoms at all, todays had laid the same day as dying, the other one the day before.

Would your vet do a post mortem, do you think?

We can really justify the expense at present or we would.

Gosh, they were pretty young . I would contact the breeder if I were you .

Could just be bad luck, did you have a really close look at them after they died? Check for parasites or other injuries, the blood could have been from after they died if the others had a chance tohave a go at them. Chickens are quite good at hiding illness, not sure a breeder would do much 4 months down the line but worth putting in a call at least in case he / she has had others the same.

I don't want to alarm you but I would be worried about some sort of infection here. I would clean all feeders and drinkers as thoroughly as you can, and at the first sign of any worrying symptoms, take them to the vet.
