Is it essential?

Will a cat litter tray do or is it too big?

What do I put in it?

A cat litter tray is perfect for 2 hybrids, put wood ash, compost, sand, soil and a handful of diatom in it in their run, and they will try eating it then bathe happily in it......or mine did at least !!!

 

Out in the open garden they will dig their own dustbath.............

 

And yes it is essential that they have a dustbath in whatever shape of form it takes, as they ruffle the dust through their feathers to clean themselves and remove some of the unwanted creatures which like a nice warm chook to snuggle in to.

I tried a litter tray briefly at first but they just pecked at it, , they much prefer the garden,lol, but I think I`ll give they tray another go in the run, just incase.

My girls snubbed a washing up bowl but love using a tub trug. Fuss pots. They're great as you can colour co-ordinate it with your grubs etc.

I bought a lovely shallow lilac tubtrug to match my eglu which i then filled with sand but my girls only dig in it - but at least they show more interest in it than they did the litter tray i bought first. I just need to know the right things to put in it.

My 2 youbgsters discovered the half full, big trug ,of dirt drying in the summer house for sifting!

i have an old meat roasting tin for a dustbath they love it only that my neighbour saw all 3 chick in the tin rolling in the dust and said " you only need foil now and they are ready for the oven" my reply wasnt pleasant

Some of mine have tyres filled with wood ash and soil, they also like to perch on the edge of the tyre and chat

 

The big table birds have the remains of a bonfire in their run which they absolutely love
