Ain't Nobody Here Posted September 30, 2009 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I noticed yesterday that she wasn't interested in any corn. She didn't seem unwell, just uninterested in food. At work today so couldn't observe but this afternoon found her crop was huge and squishy. When ES put her back over the Omlet netting I saw a little liquid come out of her beak so I tipped her gently and what seemed like a pint of clear liquid came gushing out . No noticeable smell. Poor girl, no wonder she was off her food . After a bit of Chicken Clinic research I suspect sour crop so I'm about to give her some bio yogurt with bokashi and a little Avipro. cluckingmad Posted September 30, 2009 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Not sure, squishy crop certainly a good possibility and there isn't always a foul smell... I'd get her to the vets tomorrow if you can (or as soon as possible) - if it IS sour crop the vet can prescribe her something (think its an antifungal?) that will sort the poor poppet out. Don't forget to look after yuorself too - its very upsetting when one of them is poorly, a nice glass of wine/chocolate should do the trick Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
sandyhas3chucks Posted September 30, 2009 Share Posted September 30, 2009 One of mine got sour crop, it doesn't stink straight away, it will by morning. Some people have succesfully treated at home. Nystatin Oral isthe anti fungal presription needed though usually sour crop is a seconday symptum with something else needing to be treated. I treated Hazel at home just with yoghurt & bokashi, kept her warm & upended her to remove the nasty buildup....just be careful you don't choke/drown her. After a couple of night in the front room, she perked up & went out with the others & hasn't looked back. Ain't Nobody Here Posted October 1, 2009 Author Share Posted October 1, 2009 She's still obviously not feeling well and just sits about but I managed to drain a bit more water out of her today and syringed some bio yogurt with Avipro and ACV in it onto her beak. She took quite a bit of it and I then saw her eat a few pellets. I also bought some Daktarin Gel and managed to get a bit into her beak. I'm a bit nervous about this choking/drowning business . I'm just tipping her forward slightly - is that right or should I be doing something differently? (I've ordered some Flowers of Sulphur off Ebay so will try that if she doesn't respond to the other treatment.) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She does sound a bit gargly for a moment afterwards but that seems to pass. I haven't seen pictures of upsidedown hens . That sounds drastic . Chook n Boo Mum Posted October 2, 2009 Share Posted October 2, 2009 I tipped Hazel right upside down but only for a few seconds then righted her again, let her settle then repeated the whole yukky experience until the liquid stopped flowing . At that stage I felt the chance of her getting better was greater than the risk of not, so went for the upending, once she'd had a good night's sleep and eaten & drunk a bit more she perked up considerably ...... she refused to sit in the outside sick bay whilst I was out.....I couldn't leave her indoors unattended, however good my dogs are when I'm there!! After a day or so back with her friends eating, drinking & scratching around, she was back to normal . I have watched a chook drown as somebody upended her..........not nice at all I hope she recovers quickly ANH , Have you any idea what may have caused it...I think Hazel OD'd on over-ripe strawberries...could be wrong, but too much fruit can sometimes be a contributory factor with SC. I actually wished i HAD RISKED IT MORE OFTEN, PERHAPS SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE DAY. Sorry caps locked. Perhaps I feel like it as I lost my girl on the 2nd bout 2 months later. I think pellets are not recommended. stewed apples? but perhaps have a re read of threads, yes saw FOS recommended and mentally logged it Oral daktarin good pea size blob 3 times daily. ACV in water if tey will drink it. Do you use oregano stuff? Herban is sold in "pets Corner" at my garden center, oh & I read that citricidal is great too. for it. Hope something helps. No liquid came out when I tipped her just now . I've just given her more yogurt with ACV, Avipro and Citricidal. She wolfed it down when I put mealworms in it!
