Well just a few hours to go until 4 girls walk (or is it strut) into my life! Couldn't sleep last night with the excitement of the Omlet delivery today of our first chickens. My mind kept running over all the kit, potions, powders & food bought in readiness.

 

I plan to make a dust bath for them hoping they wont want to scratch their own in the lawn! I bought a tubtrug to match my coloured Eglu with sand, compost & soil to mix together. One thought struck me though, do you recommend putting holes in the container for water drainage, or do you just cover the dust bath when it rains?

 

Yes, that's the question that kept me awake last night! My Goodness, time is going so slowly this morning!

Don't ruin that trug just yet, wait and see where they decide to dustbathe first! Then you can still use the trug for something else.

Our dustbaths are all under cover and have a slate or board propped up next to them so they don't get wet, then no drainage holes are needed.....mind you I think some of the chooks eat the contents rather than bathe in it

I wouldn't put a hole in your bucket yet either . They may well ignore your lovingly crafted dustbath and find their own favourite spot . I'd say covering it or keeping it under cover is a better option .

 

What time are you going to get your girls? Decided on breeds or names yet ?

Delivery time is 11:30 am to 2:30 pm! My 12 year old daughter who is really excited has thrown a sicky today with stomach ache. She says it's genuine but I am not so sure & I bet the school isn't either!

 

We are getting two Gingernut Rangers & two Miss Pepperpot. Names provisional as follows:-

 

My daughter gets first pick of the two Gingernut Ranger & will call her Matilda.

The other one we are not sure, perhaps slang word for Ginger
