Trixabell
Can someone please help, I have an eggbound little girl, the vet gave her some injections to try and help her along but it hasn't worked, now he suggested having her put to sleep but i REALLY don't want to do that, she is eating and drinking and i am convinced that if we can just help these eggs out she will be okay again. I have heard about bathing her, wrapping her in a hot towel and possibly giving her a little bit of spicy food, are these all true methods?? I have just watched her for an hour trying to lay bless her heart i realy want tohep her, i don't want to have to make that horrible decisionon monday

batcatz
You could try putting her in a broody cage type thing and boil a kettle under her over and over again. Don't put the kettle steam right under her - just at a distance to the side where she gets steam that's warm. I did this for a cockateil once and it worked. Hope she's ok. K-F-C
Hiya. How can you tell if a chicken is egg bound?
Trixabell
Well its not good news so far, had her indoors since friday, in a warm bathroom, with a hot water bottle underneath her, gave her a warm bath yesterday, put vaseline up her bottom and gave her cod liver oil as well, but no egg Maybe she isn't eggbound but she is really swollen underneath and she hasn't laid for weeks, the vet seemed to think she was eggbound, her tail is down all the time now, does this sound like an eggbound hen?? She is eating and drinking fine, she can just about move around, i have put her back outdoors today to be with Gwyn because Gwyn is getting lonely and i don't want to seperate them too long, but i will probably bring her back in tonight. But where do i go from here? have i really got to consider taking her lifeor shall i carry on as long as she doen't seem to be in pain which so far she doesn't? Egluntyne
It sounds to me as if she is more likely to have sterile peritonitis. Not good news really, sorry. Any treatment is merely palliative if it is peritonitis, but th vet could aspirate fluid and make her more comfortable. It will come back, but she will have an improved quality of life f until it builds up again. The vet might also prescribe antibiotics too. Trixabell
I was afraid you might say that, the first vet we saw said she has that, the vet has offered me no alternatives other than mass surgery or putting her to sleep Looks like i have a horrible decision to make
Egluntyne
Why not ask him if he can aspirate the fluid. My vet has done it a couple of times for my girls. (It did come back within a couple of months though). Cost about £35 inc antibiotics as far as I recall. This is only a short term 'remedy' it must be stressed. Trixabell
hey guys i took martha to vets last night, a different vets i might add, he agreed with the peritonitis but said it isn't sterile because he drained some off and it was all pussy BUT he agreed that although Martha should be a very sick bird, she is quite lively and he wants to do all we can and not have her put to sleep. He gave her an injection of antibiotics that will last for 2 weeks, trying to ease off the fluid, if it becomes uncomfortable for her he said he will drain some off but not all in case it becomes dangerous. I've got to take her back thurs for a check up but i am glad to report that this morning she was shuffling around the hutch and she looked quite lively
