Strange lays - pics of "lash"

Recommended Posts

My Bovans Goldline has been moulting recently and so has more or less stopped laying, apart from the odd softie. She spent a few days looking a little peeky and hunched, and sitting down a lot. Then I found these strange and frankly disgusting things in the nest box the other week after having wormed her, and thought I would include some (blurry) pics in case anyone else finds similar and panics as I did. They looked like small pieces of cooked chicken, with the same texture.

I cut them open and inside were layers of soft eggshell, liverish flecks and liquid in the larger piece, and what looked like liver pate in the smaller blob. Yuk. :vom:

After searching on the forum I've discovered it's called a "lash", parts of the hens insides being cleared out. Hope it was nothing vital! Is this a common thing to happen??

My hen perked up no end once this had come out and has been fine ever since, though still waiting for moulting to end to see if we'll get any more eggs...

just be aware that IF she hasn't expelled it all it could go bad inside and she will need treatment and FAST, but you will know alright if that is the case.

I think to "know" and be "aware" is best, "just incase"....

Personally,..... I am getting used to them my oldest keeps on, and did retain some earlier this year & we nearly lost her!

She hasn't laid in a year but does these & bigger periodically, others do them have a day or so off then back to normal. :D
