4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Our chicks are now 5 weeks old.

Everytime we open the door to the hutch they are in with mum, mum likes to get out for a mooch aboiut without her babies.

Are we getting to the stage that she needs to be separated from them and if so do they need to be under a heat lamp inside?

 

If the answer is yes can someone please give me temperatures ect they need to be under and for how long.

 

We are getting some growers pellets today to start mixing with their chick crumb but its the separating bit we are confused over!

What breed are the chicks? If they're a tough-as-old-boots breed, then they probably need another week with mum at this time of year if possible, then they should be okay, provided they have adequate shelter from the weather.

 

Hatching in early summer is much easier, well assuming you live somewhere where you actually get a summer lol.

Mine were about 8 weeks when Buffie eventually had enough & went back to the big girls. Buffie is a Splash Orpington & the Bufflings are Light Sussex if that makes any difference at all...........

It does sound a bit like it, but see if you can keep her with them for another week.

 

They'd really need to come inside if she's not with them, with maybe heat overnight - we had a frost here this morning.

Will see how she goes this week. the babies are supposed to be gold bhrama bantams but could well be anything!!

 

we have put a big rabbit run up in the garden with a tarpaulin over the top and sides, with a little house for them to go into when its cold, and are planning to put them in there next week with mum unless she has ohter ideas!!

 

They have quite a few feathers now so hopefully they will be ok.
