Picking up Hens.... kind of.....

Recommended Posts

Ok this will be a strange post....

Hens.... we will be buying 3 more within the next fortnight.... however we have a predicament.

I own a motorbike.... and no other form of transport, neither does my OH Sal.

Merrydale Poultry, in Leicestershire.... do not deliver...

Would chickens in a box be ok on the rack at the back of a bike securely strapped down to it???

Or are we just going to have to fork out for a taxi or a hirecar????

Has anyone else done it? or seen it done, or heard of it done etc. etc.???

Obviously the last thing we want is to stress them out.

You see, normally when we take either Eden the Hamster (sadly passed away) or Scramble (again sadly passed away) to the vet, we would take them in a box or a hamster carrier in a Taxi... however because we knew we were going to have scramble put to sleep yesterday, and we were in a rush because of the emergency practice and holding the vet up, we put her in a box and rode to the vets with the box strapped firmly to the rack at the back.... We did wonder if perhaps the journey might stress her to death (obviously we hoped it didn't, but we didn't have time to wait for a taxi) but to our surprise although she was so weak and listless, she was no different than when we set off.

What are peoples views and opinions of this??? Obviously we'd never want to do anything that would stress or hurt any chickens we might own in any way whatsoever, but at the same time we would rather not have to pay for a long Taxi ride or an expensive hirecar. Of course we'll do it if we must, the chickens come first.

But bearing in mind that I ride a large cruiser, and not a sports bike, there isn't much leaning involved and the engine doesn't squeal, it grumbles. Even Poach who hates the noise of sports bikes tearing up and down our nice straight road, will run towards me when I'm pulling the bike on the drive (A fence separates us she can't get near it/under it)

What do you think???? :S

Hmm. The ride on such a vehicle can't be any more bumpy than my Smart car (short wheel base = feel the bumps more) and I brought 7 ex batts home in one of these. However my concern would be about the weatherproof-ness and ventilation of the carrier as obviously this would be exposed to the elements.

How long is the journey likely to be?

The journey is likely to be 30-45 minutes, because I would drive slower and more carefully than normal (to make sure I avoided more bumps etc. etc.) (please note I ALWAYS drive slowly and carefully, but there is a difference between driving to a human's comfort, and the comfort of 3 chickens in a box on a strange journey lol)

HOWEVER... we have had a wonderful bit of serendipity, in so much as Merrydale Poultry, isn't a million miles from Sally's Father's, and she is currently on the phone asking if he'd VERY nicely, be willing to meet us there on Saturday and drive them back for us, so hopefully the bike situation could be avoided.

Which would be handy because although wind wouldn't be an issue because Myself and Sal as the Pillion would be an impenetrable wind shield, Water yes could cause a problem if it were to rain.

But we have ordered another glug and grub, and a run extension, and will buy a good sized pet carrier on the saturday we return and go to Merrydale Poultry. We'll also buy some bambo canes to thread through the run so that they can see each other but not GET to each other.

Basically SOMEHOW we'll split the run in two, give Poach the Eglu and half the run, and the others half the run, and at night put them in the carrier in the shed so they're sheltered and warm, then in the morning take them out. Also have independent free range time for Poach and the new girls. It's going to be VERY interesting, and hopefully very rewarding. But for future reference I'd still love to hear some opinions and points of view in case at some point in the future Sal's Dad wouldn't be available.

 I'd think a taxi/lift would be the best option, but if you could cover the pet carrier in a blanked or similar it should be ok?

Just to say about splitting the eglu run, I tried to use bamboo but even when spaced every 2 holes they could squeeze though  In the end we did bamboo every couple of gaps with a piece of chicken wire on one side of it and it was fine :)
