Has anyone had to deal with this? Is it harmful to dogs?

 

We recently acquired 3 chooks, and my 4 month old schnauzer puppy was very excited and pleased. She so enjoys sitting silently and watching them .

 

By way of introduction I put her on the lead and let her enter the run, thinking she would sniff and explore. To my surprise she ignored the chooks and started tucking into the poo, thinking she might lose interested I waited for her to look up at the chooks she has been watching for the last 2 days....well, it never happend, she seem set on having a 5 course chook-poo meal

 

I am concerned at what this will do to her, I am aware it is high in nitrogen, and they will be free ranging in the next couple of days.

 

Has anyone any ideas of how to stop this behaviour?Will she just go of it after she has had her fill . Should I let her continue in order to build up her constitution.

the behaviour may be hard to break, keeping pup out of the chicken area would help

My Gina does this too (Mind you, she loves rabbit raisins too )

I haven't found a way to stop her as I i can't find EVERY poop dropped by my girls before she comes along to sniff them out. I'm sure someone on here had a pooch that also loved the aubiose the poop was on and had to go to the vets as it caused a blockage. Not nice. So at the very least i try to make sure she doesn't go near their bedding.

It's the excitable kisses she wants to give me later I'm always about. Yuk. Poo breath!

My schnauzer loves it too - its so much fun cleaning his beard afterwards as well I haven't found a way to stop him either, and I agree Stoice, the poo kisses are just disgusting!

I have to say our Daisy would scoff all the chicken poo she could find when she was little Totally gross. She was so into it she would go around with her head almost up the chicks bots Disgusting I know. However I took to squirting her with water and she seems a bit less obsessed Hopefully it will stop soon..............or maybe this is wishful thinking

My dog wolfs it down. She'll eat horse poo, too. A couple of weeks ago, she ate a cat turd she'd found buried in the garden. Needless to say, she's thriving on it!

 

How anyone can let a dog lick their face is beyond me!

Every dog I have ever had has just loved poo! Always tried when they were puppies to stop the habit, but never managed. The favourite one here is duck poo, but chicken, goose, cat, toad,horse, cow... any will do actually!

I certainly don't allow doggy kisses

However, I really think the worst thing though is when they roll in fox poo! Takes days for the smell to go, regardless of what type of shampoo/disinfectant I use.

I think its just a dog thing. Our GSd loves horse poo and cow pats. We once had a dog that rolled in a cow pat, the worst of it was we lived in a terraced house at the time and I had to take her through the house to wash her. Doggy kisses are definately not allowed.

It's organic so it shouldn't do any harm. Avoid any sloppy kisses though Mine is quite selective about which ones she eats. She prefers the sticky stick to the top of her mouth jobs
