Lovely place for a cuppa!

Recommended Posts

Just a quick recommendation really. We visited my student daughter in Exeter yesterday, and after a lovely lunch at Michael Caine's Cafe overlooking the Cathedral (outside would you believe cos it was so mild) by mid afternoon we fancied a cuppa and she took us to The Boston Tea Party in Queen Street. They do the most fantastic white hot chocolate (which my dd had) and I had the nicest cup of Earl Grey I think I've ever had in a tea rooms. My OH had his usual espresso and a glass of water (and they gave us a glass of tap water without complaint and put ice in it too!) the drinks came to about a fiver. We were still stuffed from lunch so didn't do any of the cakes but they all looked delicious too. The cafe seating upstairs is a bit like a common room from Harry Potter with a mish mash of mismatched chairs and table sizes..some huge refectory style, so you'd have to share at these, and some squashy sofas ..If you are in Exeter (which is possibly one of my favourite places in the country) walk past Starbucks/ Costa etc and give it a go. It's quirky but I thought the atmosphere was great. I believe they are a small chain of west country cafes and that there are others - definitely one in Bristol.

My OH was in Michael Caines London restaurant and he was in their too!

OH came back raving and rubbing his belly as he had such a good British meal! He went on about Haddock and eggs(apparently nearly like I do..um) but he said it wasnt fancy but perfect Bristish food.

I had no idea MC had cafes too, but I love nice cake shops etc will make sure I look up that one when I am down Devon way, sounds very nice indeed

When I was a child, every time someone had a birthday we would all go to Marlborough to 'The Polly Tea Rooms', for a cream tea 8)

It was super,& I know its still there as we took our girls there a couple of years ago.

There are heaps of tea shops in Henley, but as a non tea drinker,I tend to stick to Starbucks or Costa

That said,Raymond Blanc has opened a nice looking place in town which I might try out next week with a girlfriend ,although its very, very expensive :?

It looks really nice. I hope they come a bit further east. We've got loads of tea and coffee shops here, but none are really nice. Talking of which we have a Polly Tea rooms here and I am really not that impressed with it. I went there during the half term with the kids and my mum for lunch. We had a coffee, pot of tea, 2 plain hot chocs, 1 coke, 2 jackets, a ploughmans, sandwich, and an egg and chips and it came to over £45  And it wasn't even that nice. Where it is there used to be a really lovely tea and coffee shop called Snells. They roasted their own coffee beans and the smell was amazing. They also made their own chocolates. It flt special going there. So sad its gone

We are also apparently getting a Michael Caines restaurant here :pray: It maybe a few years though as the building needs a lot of work. I just hope it doesn't fall through.

I work at Exeter airport but very rarely go into "town" for anything. Last time I visited was December 2007

A lot of people from work rate the "Starz Bar" down in North street - lively, bustling type restaurant that do tex/mex style food (combos, fajitas, etc).

Never been to Michael Caines - maybe one day when OH is feeling flush
