PANIC!!!! Bleeding chicken

Recommended Posts

peeper just jumped on to the bench to eat mash from my hand (aaaah!) and when she'd finished I noticed she was bleeding from her back toe nail (the toe/claw that sticks out the back). I distracted the other chiickens so they wouldn't start pecking her toe (panicking about cannibalism) and cleaned her up a bit but I think it's still bleeding. she must have caught it when she jumped on to the bench. should I be worrying? she doesn't seem bothered. Omigod if I am like this with a chicken what on earth would i be like with a baby.

A puff of flour will stop the bleeding - it works a bit like the old fashioned styptic powder

If its the nail it should clean up ok once the bleeding has stopped, if its on the skin give it a spray with purple spray (if you have any, blue food colouring works too) if you dont have anything to cover it with you will need to keep her separate until there is no more sign of blood

If it's still bleeding, try putting some cornflour on to staunch the flow & spray purple spray to keep the chooks away until it's healed....maybe keep her indoors for a couple of hours to keep an eye on it...............

Shouldn't be too dreadful nor last too long, it's like a dog having it's toenails trimmed too short......been there done that

Good luck

I've just had this with my Ruby - noticed yesterday that she had blood on one foot and realised it was from the back toenail of the other foot. Put my gloves on, sent the husband into the run and now Ruby has purple feet  (I would have had purple fingers if it wasn't for the gloves)
