ChrisEllis
Hi My chicks have been outside for a week ro two now - they are roughly 11 weeks old and i am literally about to move them onto growers pellets - because they ar eliving outside and eat other thing snow im guessing they eat grit - how do i feed it to them - do i just mix a small amount in with the growers pellets? Also my younger ones that are about 6 weeks - 7weeks olds that are living outside will they need grit too?
Christian
If they are on stony ground, they will find it in the soil, but it is best to leave a dish of grit for them to dip into when they feel like it. I top up the grit pot every couple of weeks. FLint grit is good as it is quite sharp.
chelsea
I do the same as Christian and keep my grit in seperate pots to the feed. I have several "grit stations" in little plastic pots hanging around the inside of my walk-in-run. Chickens will fill up on grit when they need it. laurmurf
chick grit is fed from 2 days old, when they're older they can move onto larger sized grit: I would have thought at 6/7 weeks you could begin to move them onto larger grit, although not oyster shell as that's for laying hens. ChrisEllis
Cant i just mix a small bit of grit into their feed - they are already on literally 100 m/2 land for 6 of them so there is plenty of stuff to help them - but wouldnt it just be smart to mix the grit with the crumb/growers and they will at least definitely get some - only a small amount. Also why would i or why wouldnt i feed them mixed corn, is it worth it, also can someone hlep me about mash? should i be feeding it?
Egluntyne
You can mix it with their chick crumbs. I don't bother to give chicks corn and the like as it is fattening and fills them up so that they don't eat their crumbs. I give them a bit of green stuff to peck at, such as broccoli
