Shiney Chez
Hi, My chook Popcorn has developed a limp. She is eating and drinking well, but has just started a major moult. I have fed her some Tuna today and had a closer look at the weak leg, but there is no sign of injury. Any suggestions?
Plum
I think as well as the leg I would have a look between her toes and at the pad of the foot for any foriegn body or swelling etc., and check her hips. If you feel the good side first then the limping side it will help you see a difference.
chelsea
Are you adding limestone flour to their food? It can help with extra calcium. I agree about checking her over though, we had a hen with a limp who we eventually took to the vets to find out she had ligament damage. Just keep an eye on her. Shiney Chez
I'm going to check her out thoroughly when it gets light! Going to get some Limestone powder for her today. Have given her extra grit. Will let you know how it goes, but thanks for the advice! x
Shiney Chez
Have checked her out as much as she will let me. Her feet seem fine and legs feel the same. Going to get her some Limestone powder today and keep an eye on her. She is still limping, but seems to be wanting to perch on wooden branches as opposed to standing on the ground. Instead of walking she is trying to fly along. Fingers crossed!
Egluntyne
Sounds as if she has sprained something. The limestone flour will help. If she is really struggling, I would let her rest in a cat box (in sight if her friends) for a day or two, so that she doesn't damage herself further by trying to keep up with them. Pop her in the Eglu at night though so that she will be kept warm by the others.
Shiney Chez
Good news, Poppy has stopped limping! Have been giving her calcium enriched bird grit and limestone powder all week. Just been out to open Eglu door and she came out with no sign of the limp. Merry Christmas everyone and thanks so much for the advice!
