Hi

 

We have had chickens for over a year now and we have been putting used straw, wood chippings and poo into our compost bins, however, we don't actually use that much compost. We have a veg patch but we are not using it anywhere near as fast as we are producing it!

 

What does everyone do with their chicken waste particularly in built up areas?

I put a lot in compost bins but when they are full I use the green wheelie garden waste bin provided by my council - it gets emptied every other week

 

Some people bag theirs up and put it on freecycle/freagle where there are lots of takers for it

Once my compost bin and veggie patches and brown bins are full, i sometimes take a bag down my local allotments, the people there love it, I just leave the odd bag there now and again and they help themselves.

We've only had the hens since September ... I've always needed more compost than I can make, so I'm hoping the addition of quantities of bedding and poo will bulk it up a bit ... but not sure how long it will take to rot down?

If you are giving it away do you give away a mix of everything, food, poo, straw etc? And do you give it away immediately or wait for it to rot down?

I gave my friend with four allotments the whole lot, he just put it on top and it rots down naturally over the Winter.

 

You don't need to separate it as it is all good for the veggie plots, you just can't add it straight to garden plants as it is too strong for most plants.

I'm saving the bedding I dig out from the run (Hemcore mixed with poo) and putting it in bags to put on the potato and onion beds on our allotment patch. It should be a good mulch as well as improving the soil.

 

Anybody with an allotment will be happy to have some, I would have thought.

I don't have a compost heap or bin so ours just gets put in the green council bins with leaves or grass clippings on top

Our Council bins say no animal waste so they can't go in there. When I know garden centres sell forms of dried poo because its meant to be so good as compost it seems a serious waste to put it in the normal bin.

Do you have any allotments near you? I just went down there and there was an e-mail address. I just sent them an e-mail explaining what I had and they soon answered! Its no more trouble taking it to the allotments than taking it to the tip which was my other option.

I ask people I know are keen gardeners if they want any to enrich their compost or put it on freecycle. I put four bin bags on freeecycle yesterday and I had a reply in minutes and the chap is coming tomorrow to collect. He had some last year and is back for more because it was so good.
