scrambledhead
Belated Happy New Year Every One, We have to go away on Thursday for 5 nights. We have an Eglu with 4 chickens and 2 Glugs which I have been filling with warm water each morning since the freeze started. I am worried that while I'm away although the water will be filled each morning by a friend it won't get checked again during the day. If it did start to freeze over in the afternoon would the girls have had enough water? What can I do to stop it freezing? Any advice would be gratefully received! Egluntyne
There are several threads on this subject. **Click** **Click** I would urge caution if you use anything involving electricity. It might bean idea to try to rope in another person to pay a second visit.
CharLeila
Hi, Scrambledhead, If you have a 'Glug', you could put a couple of ping pong balls in the water. This leaves a hole that your girls will be able to drink from. However, if you have a 'Super Glug' like myself, you would have to get a friend to keep an eye on it for you. Maybe treat them to some of your eggs os a thank you. Hope that helps
Egluntyne
Ping pong balls only work if there is a light layer of ice on the top of the water. If the water freezes completely, as has happened here this week, they will not be enough.
emchook
you could try and rig up something inside the eglu. I left my chooks with an icecream container weighted down with an old cd shelf .... as well as the glug outside When I got back from 2 nights it had one poo in it .. but the water had not been upturned and I am sure they would have drunk it if they were thirsty ! sjp
I'm useing tea light candles(night lights) in a flower pot the ones I've got last about an hour or so but the keep the water warm enough until the temp rises but I've seen somewere that you can get ones that last longer
