welovemarmite
are they the same i took my cats to the vet yesterday as they seemed to have colds. The vet said but they are vacinated... so that got me thinking is a cat cold the same as cat flu??
Seagazer
I wouldn't have thought so. Mine are vaccinated against cat flu too. Dave came to us with cat flu and was a bit poorly for a while but thankfully not seriously. Hope you cats feel better soon. ps I wonder if the flu evolves like it does for humans so perhaps the vaccine doesn't cover it? Ooh I hope not. I think there are some vetty people on here so they will probably know best.
Griffin
It's just like the human form of the flu vaccine, it covers some strains of the flu virus but not all. I've had vaccinated cats develop cat flu, I nearly lost one of mine once because he was so ill with flu despite being vaccinated.
Daphne
Likewise - one of mine (about 8/9 years old) developed cat flu shortly after the jab and was quite ill for a week. I believe this is reasonably uncommon; the vet was certainly surprised. Unfortunately he gave it to my old boy who fought it off once (after medication) but it did weaken him and he died 6 weeks or so later. prof
cat colds are much less severe than cat flu. similar to what our human versians are really. we had a rescued cat who had had cat flu, and he recovered but always suffered with bronchitus in the colder weather and unfortunately did not live a long life. we have also had cats who caught colds which quickly spread around all our moggies in turn making them unwell for about a week each. they really were quite poorly, but all made a full recovery. we were advised to give them paracetamol which actually helped
Chucky Mama
we were advised to give them paracetamol which actually helped OMG please please do not gives cats paracetamol is horribly toxic to cats. You are lucky that your cats are still alive http://www.vetrica.com/care/cat/paracetamol.shtml
cathybc
One of my cats was ill recently and the vet said he had flu - but not actual cat flu ( or swine flu, he was quick to point out!). He gave him two long lasting injections, I think one was an antibiotic (because this type of 'flu' was bacterial) and somthing to bring his termerature down, and he had perked up by that evening I don't know if he just called it flu as a generic title I could understand, but he said there was a lot of it about at the moment
