Ziggy
Hello everybody... I would like to pick everybody's brain... In a few weeks, I am travelling with my family (the humans only, not the fauna) to India, to visit a friend of mine who recently got married... We'll be spending a lot of time with him and his new wife, as well as his mum and dad and his sister... One thing we have planned is for me to spend some time cooking there with his mum and his wife, and I'm really looking forward to that (my friend visited us in the UK two years back and we cooked together then and I love being able to make indian food at home). Now, I'd also like to spend some time cooking for them, making proper british food... Could anyone pls fire ideas as to what I could make, keeping the following in mind : - the food would have to be vegetarian (friend and his family all follow halal diet, my family all follow a veggie diet, so sticking to vegetarian works all around) - the more british, the better (i could make a great mexican or italian, but thought it'd be fun to stick to british stuff), I am myself of belgian origins (feels like a previous life, long, long ago) but belgian food isn't vegetarian, so british has more options - I'd have to be able to find the ingredients there (not sure what they sell) or be able to adapt easily to what can be found locally - shouldn't include alcohol (to do with the halal diet), so no red wine or cider casseroles... I'd welcome ideas for main course and for some easy quick to make puddings... So far I am thinking veggie shepherds pie, and quiche... and lemon cheesecake... I know people on here are always full of great ideas, so hoping for some great inspirations! Thanks,
majorbloodnock
Glamorgan sausages - you might have to take some Caerphilly cheese with you, but suitably cared for it should keep fine. Cauliflower cheese (or variations thereof) Bubble and Squeak Sussex Pond Pudding Trifle Pease pudding Pea soup Leek and Potato soup Potato bread Whatever variations (sweet and savoury alike) you prefer of steamed suet puddings. Blind Scouse. I'll have a think and see if I can come up with some more. However, that list should keep you going for a little while. Ziggy
Those are great ideas, thank you I especially like the glamorgan sausages idea, we could make them with some rolls and potato salad or something... Also forgot to say, I'm told they don't have an oven... so my quiche idea wouldn't work...

redhotchick
What a challenge! First thought is rice pudding, there is a version that can be made on a hob. A roast dinner, without the meat (obviously!), omlettes, vegetable terrine, a spinach roulade (I'd have to dig the recipe out if you were interested). Not my favourite but vegetarian and quite British, chips, baked beans and fried egg. Would you make vegetarian burgers? my recipe below. I don't have a dehydrator, I leave them on a wire rack on a stool near a radiator. Actually, you could shallow fry them.... I don't use linseeds and I do add some chopped nuts, you could use what ever precooked pulses are available. You couldn't make bread rolls without an oven, hmmm, how about using lettuce leaves to load them up with salad and mayo/ketchup. INGREDIENTS 100g sunflower seeds 50g linseeds 1 red pepper 2 celery sticks 50g red onion 2 tbsn mixed herbs Dash sea salt METHOD Grind seeds. 150g of sunflower seeds can be used if preferred. Put aside in a large bowl. Food process (or very finely chop) the pepper, celery and red onion. Add pepper and celery to the seeds, add mixed herbs and sea salt and mix very well together. Spoon out the mixture onto hands and make into burger shapes, approximately 5cm in diameter. Place burgers in a dehydrator for 2 – 3 hours until desired texture is achieved. Ziggy
Well going on Monday, and after figuring out that there actually is an oven there and that it's working, I'm going to make Shepherd's pie, vegetable quiche, lemon cheesecake, summer fruit pudding, and pancakes. Hopefully will also learn how to make a wicked biryani...
